CHARLOTTE (N.C.) — Some big names are missing from the rosters of the American and International teams participating in this week’s Presidents Cup.
Even though Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith and others who have made the leap from the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf are not competing at Quail Hollow, Club, their absence was felt and addressed before the biennial bout.
In a press conference pre-event on Tuesday, Trevor Immelman, International captain, and Davis Love III, American captain, said that “every single player I spoke to early in this process knew exactly the situation” They knew that it was unlikely that they would be able to represent the International Team if they made certain choices. That was the basis of their decision-making.
“All the cards were on the table and everyone knew their position.”
Internationals Lynch: Americans finally have reason to win event they almost never lose
After the Internationals lost a close match 16-14 in 2019, at Royal Melbourne, Australia, Immelman said he signed up to a set of rules because the event is sanctioned and owned by the PGA Tour and his team follows those rules.
“We are a team of our word. He continued, “We’re a team full of honor.” “So that’s where you’re at.”
Immelman was a two-time International squad member as a player in 2005, 2007 and 2019, and as an assistant in 2019. He said that he was up-to-speed and that players who moved to LIV were open and honest throughout the decision-making process.
“Am I disappointed they aren’t able to come? Absolutely,” said Immelman. “But we have the 12 men here that we love, and now it’s our turn. We will be up against an American team. So we’re looking forward.
He continued, “When you look at the team, what are we trying to tap into? The International team represents billions all over the globe.” “So we are trying to tap into that, incite the youngsters all around, and welcome all fans from all those countries to come down and support us in any way, shape or form because they’re their team.”
Love, a Ryder Cup captain twice in 2012 and 2016, stated that the Americans miss Johnson. However, Love believes the red, white, and blue “pretty well got the guys we wanted.”
Love said, “We are really happy with the 12 that we have because we know they are committed and excited.” “So, just like Trevor, we have a lot of guys who are excited to play and there is no talk of anyone missing in our team room.”
