Greg Norman will be heading to Washington, D.C., to discuss L-I-V.
LIV Golf’s commissioner and CEO is scheduled to meet with members of Congress on Capitol Hill this week to discuss the new circuit, which features 54-hole tournaments and huge paydays. Politico first reported the news.
“LIV Golf will be visiting the Hill this week in order to meet with legislators from both parties,” LIV Golf confirmed Golfweek. “Given the PGA Tour’s efforts to stifle progress in reimagining golf, we believe it’s imperative that members are educated on LIV’s business model to counter the Tour’s anticompetitive efforts.
LIV Golf, which is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has been criticised as a way for the kingdom to “sportswash its human rights record”. Saudi Arabia has been accused in a wide range of human rights violations, including torture, forced disappearances, and politically motivated killings. Saudi royals and the Saudi government were also accused of being involved in Jamal Khashoggi’s murder, a Saudi journalist.
Both LIV Golf and PGA Tour have been fighting for supremacy in professional golf. This ongoing power struggle is not likely to end soon.
In August, eleven golfers sued the PGA Tour over antitrust violations. However, only seven of them remain after four players removed all their names. A California judge denied three LIV players the temporary restraining orders that would have allowed them to participate in the FedEx Cup Playoffs of the PGA Tour. It was also revealed that the antitrust case would be opened in August 2023. The PGA Tour is also under investigation by the United States Department of Justice.
Cameron Smith won LIV Golf’s Chicago event Sunday at Rich Harvest Farms, Sugar Grove, Illinois by three shots, beating Dustin Johnson and Peter Uihlein. After a two week break, the series will host consecutive events in Bangkok (Thailand) on Oct. 9-10, and Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) on Oct. 14-16.
