LOS ANGELES – With a U.S. Open taking place at the Los Angeles Country Club on Wilshire Boulevard, it was inevitable that celebrities would come to watch.
Justin Thomas was surprised by one person after his Tuesday practice round with Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fooler, as well as amateur Michael Brennan.
He said, "I thought I would never get to see Metta World Peace," with a smile.
Metta Sandiford-Artest, a former NBA All-Star and champion, was previously known as Ron Artest and Metta world peace. The 43-year old spent 17 years in the NBA, playing for six different teams. But 18 months ago, he discovered golf through a former basketball legend, Los Angeles Lakers legend and three-time champion "Big Game James".
"I don't know. Sandiford Artest said, "I don't know the names of NBA players let alone these guys." "I used to love basketball but now I love golf. I'm so glad I discovered the sport. "I'm so happy that I found this sport."
St. John’s native and New Yorker, St. John admits that he's not very good. But that hasn't kept him from playing every chance he gets.
He said, "I have been invited to play in different places. I will show up at any course that I can, especially one of good quality," with a smile. "I'll play anywhere people invite me, even Bermuda."
Sandiford Artest, a Lakers superstar in his own way, won his one title with the team back in 2010. He plans to catch the action at the ultra exclusive club in Beverly Hills this week.
I like it because the game requires you to concentrate. You'll be hit by the ball if you fall asleep. You can compete and focus, but you are mostly competing against yourself, which is what I love.
"I like golf."
