DETROIT — Luke Donald received a few more messages on his phone than usual after he completed his first round at Rocket Mortgage Classic.
They didn’t want to be rude and congratulate him for his solid score of 2-under 70 at Detroit Golf Club.
According to the Telegraph, the report said that Henrik Stenson, a 44-year-old Englishman, will replace Stenson as captain of Europe’s 2023 Ryder Cup team in Italy.
Donald stated that there was nothing to be reported. “I’ve been in discussions with Guy Kinings, Ryder Cup director), at the European Tour. That’s all I have right now. Thomas Bjorn, and a few other guys are being considered. I am confident that I have a good chance.
When Stenson was first selected for the role in March, Donald was viewed as the bridesmaid.
“I believed I had a good chance this season. Donald stated that he hoped that this was not Donald’s chance. “We have many very worthy candidates, legends in the Ryder Cup, guys such as Sergio. I don’t know how this whole Saudi thing will play out or if anyone will be knocked out by it.” This is a bit of a mystery.
Stenson reacted to the question and joined LIV Golf. LIV Golf is a rival tour that was backed by Saudi Arabian royalty. This rival tour has been criticized for its poor record in human rights abuses. Stenson, who will make his LIV debut this weekend, was fired two weeks ago. Donald stated that he was shocked by Stenson’s change of heart.
“I have had some of the best moments on the course during the Ryder Cups. It is an incredible honor to represent Europe at the Ryder Cup. I would love to become a captain. Donald stated that it would also be an honor. “I was surprised that Donald would submit his name if he had plans to attend LIV. The European Tour was aware of that. They took him at his word that he wouldn’t do it. All of us must sign a contract or clause stating that (LIV) will not be able to affect our lives.
“I am disappointed that he wouldn’t put his name forward to go to LIV. It makes sense for certain men to go to LIV in certain circumstances in their career. It is a huge step to take.
Donald stated that LIV’s idea was fascinating and that everyone has numbers. However, he hadn’t been approached to participate in the 48-man league. He was asked about joining the TV announcing team.
He said, “Turned it down pretty quickly.” “A slight in my game. Although I’m not a great player, I appreciate your efforts.
Donald stated that he was informed that Team Europe’s captain decision would be made by next week. This would make him the first Englishman to hold the non-playing role since Nick Faldo (2008).
He said, “If I was given this captaincy, I would keep my word and see it through.” Let me say it this way. “I wouldn’t do a Henrik.”
Donald, a four-time Ryder Cup winner (2004, ’06, 10, & ’12), six-time DP World Tour winner, five-time PGA Tour winning player, who played college golf at Northwestern, gave a 30-minute presentation earlier this year to three Ryder Cup captains Darren Clarke and Thomas Bjorn. David Howell was also present. He stated that he did not need to give a second presentation. The other finalist in March was Robert Karlsson from Sweden, Paul Lawrie of Scotland and Edouardo Molinari from Italy.
Donald, who was formerly the world No. 1. He was vice-captain for the Ryder Cups’ previous two Ryder Cups.
He said, “We’ve been many time.” It’s a beautiful city with amazing architecture and a rich history. This is one of my favorite places.
Perhaps in late September 2023.
