Those who want to participate in one of America’s most prestigious Women’s Opens can begin planning their trip. The USGA announced Tuesday the qualifying locations for the 78th U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links. This is the first U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach, and it’s 14th USGA championship.
The 36-hole qualifiers will take place at 23 locations in the U.S., Canada, Japan, and Belgium. The Club at Mediterra (South Course), Naples, Florida and Shannopin Country Club, Pittsburgh will host the first qualifiers on May 9. The final round of qualifying will take place on June 7.
Online entries open Wednesday, February 15, at 5 p.m. ET. To be eligible, players must have a Handicap Index of not more than 2.4 and be a professional.
Birdie Kim (2005) was the last player to win U.S. Women’s Open. She qualified through qualifying. 22 qualified golfers made the 36-hole cut at the Women’s Open at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in 2022.
The USGA received 1,874 entries last year for the U.S. Women’s Open in Pine Needles, which was a record. The previous record was set in 2015 with 1,873 entries to the championship at Lancaster Country Club (Pa.) which will also host the 2024 championship.
Two qualifying events will be held at clubs which have hosted the U.S. Women’s Open in the past. Betty Jameson won the 1947 championship at Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro. Jameson was previously the winner of the 1940 U.S. Women’s Amateur at Pebble Beach. Betsy Rawls won her first Women’s Open title in 1951 at Druid Hills Golf Club. Qualifying will be held at Atlanta’s club for the sixth consecutive year.
Six U.S. Opens have been hosted by Pebble Beach Golf Links. Opens (1972, 1982, 1992, 2000, 2010, 2019), five U.S. Amateurs (1929, 1947, 1961, 1999, 2018) and two U.S. Women’s Amateurs (1940, 1948).
