Jim Boeheim has an extensive resume.
Since 1976, he has been Syracuse’s basketball headman and led the team to three national championship games. Boeheim’s teams lost their first two appearances, before he rode a young Carmelo Anton to victory over Kansas in 2003.
Boeheim was also a member the Syracuse golf team before his basketball career.
Boeheim stated that “it was fun,” in an article at Syracuse.com. I wasn’t very good. I was probably the fifth- or sixth man on the team. I was probably in the high 70s at that time.
He was awarded two varsity letters in 1964, and ’65. As an individual, he also had a 6-6-1 record.
Charlie Jurgonis, who was part of the team’s 1962-64 season, said that “He was a legitimate three-handicap.” “By legitimate, I don’t mean that he couldn’t play another course and still play well. He could play anywhere he wanted to play a 3.
He knew he was a great putter. He knew that he was a good putter and had to hit the green.

Ted Till spent one year with Boeheim and described him as a grinder.
He was a good short player. He wasn’t a very long hitter. He wasn’t as long as I was. He probably hit the ball the same distance as me. He was a good player of cerebral golf. He was a skilled golfer.
Barry Buchsbaum stated that Jim was exactly like him on the basketball sidelines. He was a whiner. He would swear at himself and not the referees, because golf is an individual game. He would miss a shot, and then he’d curse at himself. He was hard on himself. He was an excellent teammate and a lot of fun.
Boeheim was not only a player for the golf team, but he also coached them. Till was a member the Boeheim-led team.
Boeheim stated that coaching golf was a lot of fun. “I would send these guys out, and then I’d go back to the back. They would play front and back, and I’d play back and forth.
The Orange won 5-2 in his last year as a coach (1973).
Syracuse announced Wednesday that Boeheim would not be returning to the Orange as coach. Adrian Autry, associate head coach, will replace Boeheim at 78 years old.
