Tiger Woods will join the PGA Tour’s policy board as a player director for the first-time, the PGA Tour announced on Tuesday.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, the Tour’s Player Directors, and Player Advisory Council Members announced a new deal “to ensure the Tour lives up its mission as a player-driven organisation, ‘for players, by players. ‘”
Woods’s appointment brings the Tour to a total of twelve board members: six player directors; five independent directors; and one representative of the PGA of America.

Current Board members include Patrick Cantlay (chairman), Charley Hoffman (vice-chairman), Peter Malnati (vice-chairman), Rory McIlroy, and Webb Simpson. Independent directors include Ed Herlihy and Jimmy Dunne; Mark Flaherty and Mary Meeker; a replacement for Randall Stephenson is to be announced; and John Lindert, PGA of America director.
According to the press release, the player leaders have united to “uphold Tour’s core values” and request that certain steps are taken immediately. Monahan agreed to support these players and their demands.
In order to clarify that in the future, no major decisions can be taken without the involvement and approval from the player directors, Commissioner Monahan and the players will work together on amending the governing documents of the Policy Board. Other words, there will be no more bombshell deals like the announcement on June 6, that the Tour of Saudi Arabia and the PIF would form a new entity in order to combine their commercial interest.
Colin Neville, special advisor to the player directors, will have full knowledge of the current state of negotiations as outlined in the Framework Agreement. Neville will also be given access to all documents and information he needs to perform his duties for the players.
As part of the Framework Agreement, the player directors were promised complete transparency and the power to approve or decline any changes to the Tour. Woods has been largely silent ever since the controversial agreement was announced in June.
Woods stated in a press release that he was “honored” to represent players on the PGA Tour. The players are committed to ensuring that any changes made to Tour operations will be in the best interests of all Tour stakeholders including players, fans and sponsors. The players are grateful to Commissioner Monahan who has agreed to listen to our concerns. We look forward to working with him at the table to make the best decisions for the future. “He has my full confidence in moving forward with these new changes.”
Monahan said, “Tiger’s voice and his leadership have been instrumental to the success and growth of the PGA Tour throughout his career. To apply this to our governance plan and future plans at this critical time is both welcome and impactful.” “I’m committed to restoring any lost confidence or trust that may have occurred due to the announcement of our Framework Agreement. In the negotiations, I will be working with the PGA Tour’s player directors and PAC to ensure that the PGA Tour membership gets the best deal today and tomorrow. “Any agreement we reach will be shaped by the input of our members and their approval through our player director.”
According to a Tour release, Woods and Cantlay expressed their support for the changes.
