Many golfers are trying to control the club face during impact to try to keep it square. The golfers believe that holding off the club face will keep it straight through impact. It’s understandable, but I want everyone to know that holding off when it’s not needed simply does not work. Holding the face off can actually reduce the ability of the golfer to control the angle of the face at impact. You can get a better idea by watching this video.
Here are some notes you should take:
-
The club face always closes relative to the goal during the downswing. This is due to the rotation that occurs during the swing.
-
The angle of the face is a major factor in the release. This occurs long before the impact. A closed face will defer the release.
-
The trail wrist is the opposite of the lead wrist. It goes from flexion to extension. Imagine throwing a Frisbee and a Ball with the lead hand.
-
A scoop occurs when the player adds loft, and a Flip occurs when the player must speed up the rate of the face closing.
Try the exercise that I showed you with the magnetic club face indicator. Start by using one hand and gradually add the other. Be aware of how quiet the club face is in the impact zone. Swing the club too hard and the indicator will fly! Real swings should feel like you’re letting your wrists and clubhead soar in the downswing, and then through the strike. Throw hard!
Please shout out if you have questions or comments. I and my family wish you and yours a Happy Holiday.
