SCOTTSDALE (Ariz.) — Rose Zhang ended her sophomore season with a win on Monday, capping off one of the best college golf seasons in history. She’s now being rewarded again for her superiority.
Zhang won the ANNIKA Award 2023 presented by Stifel for the second consecutive year. This award is given to the top female college golfer. Zhang is the third winner to have won twice, after Leona Maguire, and Maria Fassi. She’s also the second woman in history to win consecutive ANNIKA Awards.
Zhang stated that “winning the ANNIKA Award is the best thing you can do.” Zhang said, “To win the ANNIKA Award again is something that I have done all year, and even though it wasn’t on my mind at first, it was a byproduct.”
Zhang’s sophomore season was a record-breaking one. The highlight of her record-breaking sophomore year was winning eight times. Her victory at the 2023 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship, held at Grayhawk Golf Club on Monday, is the cherry on top. She won the Pac-12 Championship, NCAA Pullman Regional, and had a NCAA record 68.81 score average.
She set a women’s course-record at Pebble Beach by shooting a 9-under-63 during the Carmel Cup season opener, which she also won. She will tee off in July at the U.S. Women’s Open, which takes place at Pebble Beach.
Zhang explained that he had a different mentality when he went to the course this year. “Starting with the fall season, and after talking to coach (Anne Walker), I had goals in mind for just trying to become the best player that I could be.
This is another milestone in her amateur life. Zhang won the 2023 Augusta National Women’s Amateur last month and has spent many weeks in the top 10. The World Amateur Golf Ranking is the highest ranking of any female amateur ever.
Rachel Heck won the ANNIKA Award in 2021, making this the third consecutive year that a Stanford golfer wins the award.
Since 2014, the winner of the ANNIKA Award has been selected by college players, coaches and members from the college golf media.
