AUSTIN (Texas) — The USGA and R&A announced plans earlier this month to reduce the distance at the elite levels of the game. They will use the golf ball for this purpose. Sam Burns, a former Louisiana State star, was one of the PGA Tour players who protested the move. He said it was silly and insisted that players should unleash huge drives.
Burns stated, “At the end the day regardless of what it is, it’s an entertainment sport and people don’t necessarily want to come here and see guys hit it shorter.” They enjoy watching men hit it 350 yards.”
What is the expression about driving for show and… putting like Sam Burns.
Rory McIlroy impressed patrons at Austin Country Club with his driving skills, completing more than a dozen drives of over 350 yards during the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies match play.
Burns? He missed McIlroy’s gun show. He was too busy winning.
Burns used a white-hot putter to sink every putt, and he was able to defeat Scottie Scheffler in a thrilling semifinal matchup. He then smashed past Cameron Young in his final, 6 and 5, to win the title.
Burns’ last win was in Texas at Charles Schwab Challenge last May. He made 47 birdies on the way, which is quite impressive.
Burns led 1-up going into the 18th hole. He then almost holed out a chip in the final to beat Scheffler. He missed an 11-footer, which would have ended the reigning champ. Scheffler then stepped up to the plate and putt from five feet.
Scheffler seemed to have the line to win the second hole extra, but he missed a putt that would have kept the match alive. Burns beat his friend on the 21st hole with a curling 15 footer.
Burns was 1 down in the final after the second hole. But that putter got hot and he used a wild series of long putts, including a 20-footer on Number. 8. A 12-footer on No. 10, and a 24-footer at No. 12 –. Burns finished the round with eight birdies over the 10 remaining holes. Young was eliminated on the 13th.
Burns stated, “My putter was really great today.” “I have been putting it well all week, and I knew that if the ball was in the right position, we would have many chances to get it in,” Burns said.
Burns, McIlroy Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm are now the only six players to have five wins in the past three years. He was unhappy with his performance up to this point and now feels like a better player.
Professional golf is difficult. It can be difficult at times, and Burns stated that he has been struggling with his golf swing. “I didn’t have the control that I wanted. I wasn’t able hit the shots that are usually possible. My coach Brad has been a rock star and helped me tremendously.
Young was aware that he would run into Burns’s buzzsaw, but he was pleased with his performance at his first event. Young is now in a similar spot to Scheffler 18 months ago. The former Wake Forest star has been a runner up six times in 37 PGA Tour starts.
“All I can say is that I played very well. Young stated that he was just grateful to have made it all the way. “I felt like I had a lot of really tough opponents, and I just ran into Sam Burns who is playing really well today. We all know that he is one of the most talented players in the world. When he is at his best, he may be the greatest player in the entire world. He was against me today. It was great fun. I enjoyed it. It’s a great game, and I look forward to the next few months.”
McIlroy defeated Scheffler 2 to 1.
