Augusta National Golf Club is the focus of golf’s attention this weekend. This brings plenty of attention and praise to Alister MacKenzie, the famous golf course architect. The Masters’ annual home isn’t MacKenzies best-rated layout, however.
Golfweek’s Best ranks golf courses each year using the input of over 800 raters around the world. Augusta National was ranked No. 3. Among all the classic courses in America built before 1960. Golfweek’s rating system is based on a scale from 1-10. Only the best courses in the world receive a higher average rating than 9.
Augusta National, which has seen a lot of modifications over the years, ranks 9.51 out 10. This shows that MacKenzie as well as the architects who helped with renovations at Augusta National were very proud of the work they did on the old tree farm. It’s not the best course in America, however, designed by a Scottish surgeon.
This honor goes to a club in the west. You can click through to view MacKenzie’s top courses around the world as rated by Golfweek’s Best.
It is worth noting that MacKenzie was a master of many courses. These tracks include MacKenzie originals and those that received significant MacKenzie input. Many of the clubs he worked on (e.g. California Golf Club) were not included in these calculations. This is because much of his work was redone or he didn’t have most of the design input.
