Happy days.
Emiliano Grillo, from Argentina, described his first two rounds at the 3M Open Blaine in Minnesota as “embarrassing”.
He said that Thursday’s bogey-free round of 67 was “one of my best rounds.” It almost felt as if I had no chance of making it bogey.” Grillo, 29, signed for a 6-under 65 on Friday at TPC Twin Cities to move to 10-under 132. He also took the 36-hole clubhouse lead over Callum Tarren by two strokes.
Grillo stated, “Anything below par on windy day, it’s an advantage.” “I was able manage the ball fairly well and was able make the putts when given the opportunity.”
Grillo’s season was bleak until two weeks ago, when he finished second at the John Deere Classic. It was his first top 10 finish of the season, and his first overall since May. This secured his Tour card for next year and took a huge weight off his shoulders.
Grillo is aiming for his first PGA Tour title, since the 2016 Frys.Com Open. This will be his rookie season. Although he is a great ball-striker, his putter can be a problem. He has not ranked in the top 100 in Strokes Gained Putting, but he was ranked as low at 192 and in this category. He was ranked No. He was ranked No.153 but gained more strokes with his short stick Friday. Grillo stated that he would ignore his putting statistics.
He explained that the days when I did not play well around the greens this year were because I hit very badly or didn’t want it to be there. “I would say 90 percent of my rounds this year, I putted very well. It helps to hit it close. When you make a few, it kind of kicks your momentum and makes the hole bigger.
Grillo hit four putts over 15 feet in his second round. He almost had one at the 12 th but missed the shorter eagle attempt from 7 feet.
Grillo stated, “It’s funny how this sport works.” You hit it at 10 feet and it misses, but it’s 35 feet, 40 feet or 45 feet high and it makes it. It’s quite a fun game.
Tarren, a 31 year old rookie from England can relate. After switching putters, he couldn’t purchase a putt the first round. He ended the trial and put it back in his locker. Then he found an old friend, Odyssey No. He has been using 7 for seven to eight years.
Tarren stated, “It got my out here.” Sometimes it needs to be left alone to get its fire back on.
Tarren started his season with seven missed cuts, and a disqualification. But he has found his groove and is now at No. He was 146 in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, with more work to complete to keep his card for next year. Tarren putted 45 feet to set the 3M Open course record but settled for 63.
Tarren said, “I have nothing to lose and much to gain.” Tarren hit all 18 greens in regulation Friday. “I’m going to keep my foot on the ground and make as many birdies possible…I don’t know what it might be, but I feel calm, chilled, and confident.
Tony Finau, at No. After Hideki Matsuyama’s withdrawal on Thursday, 17 is the highest-ranked player in the world. Finau is playing a course that he loves. Finau was T-3 in 2020, and his score improved to 43 under through 14 career rounds at TPC Twin Cities. Finau finished at 7-under 135 with a score of 68, three behind the lead. He was also pleased to see some putts drop.
He said that he was happy to score one on 7 (which was my 16th hole) and that the 22-foot birdie was a nice surprise. “I felt like there were a lot of looks before I hit the green and it was nice to get one on my way back.”
Finau, 32 years old, has made the Land of 10,000 Lakes his regular stop. Finau has second and first cousins in the area and enjoys renting a house close to the course for his extended families.
He said, “I’m not a professional fisherman but this is the only time of the year that I know that I will go out fishing on the lakes.” “My family and me usually buy a house near here. There are many fish around, and there are only lakes. My family has a lot of fun being here.”
