Harbor Shores Resort hosted the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. This year, the championship returned to one of the most inspiring Jack Nicklaus Signature designs. Since 2012, the oldest senior major championship in Southwest Michigan has been a staple every other year thanks to Whirlpool’s support.
The 2020 event was cancelled due to the pandemic. However, the buildup to the event returning for its fourth year this Memorial Day weekend was just as exciting as this years Champion Steven Alker, New Zealand. He shot a final round of 63. Majors are often attended by high expectations when visitors arrive at the first tee. Harbor Shores golfers can take the place of this year’s champion.
Harbor Shores Resort is a great destination for those who want to tick off a bucket-list item that also hosts one the world’s top majors. The Southwest Michigan Airport is the only airport that accepts private aircraft. You’ll be able to see miles upon miles of sandy beaches, as well as the scenic routing of Nicklaus’ 18-favourite designs.
This premier golf destination features quality championship golf, luxury accommodations, exceptional dining options, as well as entertaining non-golf activities. Imagine yourself walking along the fairways with legends of the game, then hitting shots from the same spots and conditions the next day.
The centerpiece of a major development in Benton Harbor is Nicklaus’ Nicklaus design. Local Whirlpool factories and plants were converted into F.D.R.’s arsenal for democracy and manufacturing components for fighter aircrafts during World War II. In the 1950s and 1960s, the city became a bustling manufacturing center. However, it was destroyed over the next 20 decades. This led to community leaders realizing that change was urgently needed. The course has seen revitalization and multi-purpose developments over the past decade. These include multiple residential communities and a luxury riverside boutique hotel.
Nicklaus designed a beautiful routing that crosses four terrains, in an amazing topographical location. The Inland terrain is a beautiful loop that winds through six holes. Holes 9-9 wind through a dramatic dunes-scape that offers breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. Holes 10-13 wind through woodlands and pass through rolling hills, ravines and hardwood forests. The Paw Paw River, Ox Creek, and the wetlands are the final five holes.
Signage that tells the story of each hole — complete with before-and after images and photographs showcasing Whirlpool’s visions as well as engineering feats – is highlighted. Beautifully crafted art pieces are placed alongside the signs to commemorate each of Nicklaus’ 18 major championships.
The new Champions Villa offers 4-8 players the perfect place to stay while you plan your stay. It is conveniently located on the first fairway, right next to the clubhouse. The 2,000-square foot, 4-bedroom, 4-bathroom unit is a perfect example of golf luxury. It has a full kitchen and an open living area. The beautiful Inn At Harbor Shores is another excellent choice for lodging. It is a 92-room hotel located on the St. Joseph River. The hotel features 14 luxurious suites, two condominiums on the top floor, a rooftop meeting area, and a variety of dining options such as Plank’s Tavern on the Water and Torch & Tapas. The Champions Package includes two nights accommodation and unlimited golf for four people.
The region is home to Harbor Shores Golf Club and other great public land. If you are a serious game hunter and have the right connections to make it happen, Point O’ Woods or Lost Dunes are two of the best private clubs in the area. Make sure you spend some time at the beaches and in downtown Detroit to enjoy great food and the Makers Trail, which features Michigan’s best breweries and wineries.
