Although the rounds of stroke play were held at Ridgewood Country Club or Arcola Country Club respectively, match play began with the Round of 64. Ridgewood was the sole host.
The U.S.GA was founded in 1895. Amateur is one of the 15 oldest championships in the USGA. Four matches were played on Friday after the Thursday marathon, which featured Rounds 32 and 16.
Nicholas Gross, a Pennsylvania-born 15-year-old, was the story of the quarterfinals. He defeated the No. Luke Potter, the Sweet 16 seed, was defeated by Nicholas Gross. Gross lost his Friday match.
